Follistim® AQ (follitropin beta injection) is a human follicle stimulating hormone (hFSH) prepared from recombinant DNA technology. Follistim® AQ is a prescription medication manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc.
Follistim® AQ is currently FDA-approved for use in men and women for infertility treatment. In women, Follistim® AQ is used to help healthy ovaries to mature and release eggs. It is also used as a part of assisted reproductive technology program for development of multiple follicles in the woman. In men, Follistim® AQ is indicated to stimulate sperm production in those with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, not due to primary testicular failure.

What form is Follistim® AQ currently available?

Follistim® AQ is available in 2 dosage forms: single-dose vial, and pen cartridge.
The Follistim® AQ vial is available in 2 strengths: 78 IU and 150 IU of active drug in 0.5 mL solution.

The Follistim® AQ cartridge is available in 4 strengths: 150 IU, 300 IU, 600 IU and 900 IU of active drug. The cartridge must be used with Follistim® AQ Pen device.

What are some potential side effects of Follistim® AQ?

The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, headache, stomach pain, cyst in the ovary, and injection related reaction such as bruising, redness or swelling at the area of injection.
Follistim® AQ can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women. Common symptoms of OHSS include severe pelvic pain, shortness of breath, and weight gain. Other serious side effects include breathing problems, and risk of blood clots and strokes.
These are not all the possible side effects of Follistim® AQ. If you are experiencing any unwanted side effect(s) or have any specific questions regarding a side effect, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Who should NOT use Follistim® AQ?

Do not take Follistim® AQ if you are already pregnant or have hypersensitivity to recombinant hFSH products, streptomycin or neomycin. Adults with tumors related to pituitary or sex-hormones, ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to PCOS, primary gonadal failure, or abnormal uterine bleeding of unknown origin should not use Follistim® AQ.

Talk to your doctor if you are nursing to discuss the benefit versus risk of using Follistim® AQ. It is not known if the drug will be passed into mothers' milk.

How do you administer Follistim® AQ?

follistim Follistim® AQ may be injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly for women, but must be injected subcutaneously for men in order for the medication to work.
For Vials:

Follistim® AQ cartridge must be loaded into Follistim® pen device for injection. After loading the cartridge, insert pen needle into the device, then dial the appropriate dose for injection. How do you store Follistim®?

Store all Follistim® AQ products away from direct light.
For Vials:
Keep Follistim® AQ vial in the carton. Drug may be stored either in refrigerator or at room temperature (up to 77°F).
For Cartridges:
Follistim® AQ cartridge may be stored either at room temperature (up to 77°F), or inside refrigerator (36-46°F).

How long does Follistim® last?

For Vials:
Follistim® AQ vial is stable until the indicated expiration date listed on the packaging when stored in refrigerator. If a new Follistim® AQ cartridge is stored in room temperature, it is stable for up to three months unless the expiration date is earlier.
For Cartridges:
Before opening, the Follistim® AQ cartridge is stable until the indicated expiration date listed on the packaging when stored in refrigerator. If new Follistim® AQ cartridge is stored in room temperature, it is stable for up to three months unless the expiration date is earlier. After opening, the Follistim® AQ cartridge is stable up to 28 days either in refrigerator or room temperature.
