PREGNYL®

[CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN FOR INJECTION, USP]

Pregnyl® (chorionic gonadotropin for injection, USP) is a purified form of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) that contains luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Pregnyl® is a prescription medication manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc.

Pregnyl Pregnyl® is currently FDA-approved for use for infertility treatment, crytochidism, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism secondary to a pituitary deficiency in males. In fertility treatment, Pregnyl® is shown to help ovulation in women without primary ovarian failure, who have been appropriately pretreated with menotropin.

What form is Pregnyl® currently available?

Pregnyl® is available as a multi-dose vial. Each box contains 10,000 USP units of active drug, in form of sterile dried powder and a 10 mL vial of diluent, or mixing liquid.

What form is Pregnyl® currently available?

The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, headache, fatigue, edema, and injection related reactions such as bruising, redness or pain at the area of injection.
Pregnyl® can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women. Common symptoms of OHSS include severe pelvic pain, shortness of breath, and weight gain. Other serious side effects include breathing problems, and risk of blood clots and strokes.

Who should NOT use Pregnyl®?

Do not take Pregnyl® if you are already pregnant or have hypersensitivity to hCG preparations or its excipients. Avoid Pregnyl® if you have precocious puberty, prostate cancer or androgen-dependent cancer.

How do you administer Pregnyl®?

Pregnyl® needs to be injected intramuscularly in order for the medication to work. The drug must be reconstituted with diluent. Make sure the solution is completely dissolved before injection. Please read the package insert (PDF: pregnyl PI). for detailed instructions.

How do you store Pregnyl®?

Before opening, store Pregnyl® away from direct light in room temperature (59 - 86°F). After reconstitution, the solution must be stored in the refrigerator.

How long does Pregnyl® last?

Before opening, Pregnyl® may be stored in room temperature until the expiration date. Once the medication is mixed, the drug is stable for up to 60 days when refrigerated.
